You Probably Already Know That: -

This was the second story of the second season to take inspiration from “Moby Dick”, with the gaseous creature standing in for Kirk/Ahab’s white whale.

Spock’s blood is based on copper rather than iron. Strictly speaking this means that he has haemocyanin rather than haemoglobin. Like a lobster.

Lt. Leslie, whom we have not seen for a while, is killed by the creature, but reappears on the Enterprise. This appears to be a mistake since there’s no explanation given as to how this happened.

It is shown that Kirk was a junior officer on the USS Farragut. It is not made clear whether this was before or after the events referred to in “The Conscience of the King” It does seem to contradict what we were told in “Court Martial” about Kirk’s first commission being on the USS Republic.

Art Wallace who scripted this story would also return to write the teleplay for Gene Roddenberry’s story “Assignment Earth”, the final story of season 2. (He shouldn’t have bothered, since Gene Roddenberry extensively rewrote it anyway.)
